First Day of School

It is your first day of school, and you have a big decision to make. No, I am not talking about choosing chocolate milk or regular milk at lunch—although that is also extremely important. I am talking about what you are going to wear.

First impressions matter, so do not blow it! Just kidding. One wrinkled sock will not ruin your entire school year.

My name is Janus Walker. I am eight years old, heading into the third grade at St. George Episcopal School, and I am thrilled to be a famous guest writer for FairyTaleFashion.org. I believe the perfect first-day outfit should say, “I am ready to learn; I have my own style, and yes, I remembered to brush my teeth.”

First, try to look classy. Classy does not mean dressing like you are going to dinner with the royal family. It simply means wearing clothes that are clean, neat, comfortable, and school-appropriate.

Choose your outfit the night before. Do not wait until the morning and shout, “I have nothing to wear!” while standing in front of a closet filled with clothes.

Wear something that lets you sit, walk, play, and learn comfortably. Do not wear an outfit that needs to be adjusted every eleven seconds. It is hard to concentrate on math when your waistband is arguing with you.

Your hair should also be neat and represent who you are. There is no one correct hairstyle. You can wear braids, curls, twists, a ponytail, a bun, a headband, or your natural hair. Your hairstyle should reflect your personality and make you feel confident.

Accessories are another way to show your style, but do not overdo it. I suggest one bracelet, one ring, and earrings featuring your birthstone. If you do not wear earrings, choose a cute hair clip, watch, or small pin.

Do not wear so many bracelets that your arm sounds like a tambourine during class.

Fashion psychologist Dr. Dawnn Karen has explained that clothing can affect how we feel. An outfit that makes you feel good may also help you feel more confident.

The first day of school can be exciting and a little scary. A great outfit will not answer every question or help you remember where your classroom is, but it can give you one less thing to worry about.

So, stand tall, smile, and walk into school confidently. Your style does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be yours.
